‘Flying’ turtle crashes through car’s windshield in Georgia, photos show
A turtle smashed through a Georgia woman’s windshield, prompting her to warn other drivers about the “flying” reptiles.
Latonya Lark says she and her brother were traveling on Truman Parkway in the Savannah area earlier this month when she saw what she thought was a brick in the air, WSAV reported Tuesday.
It was actually a turtle, and it was coming right toward their car, according to the TV station.
Dramatic photos from Lark’s Facebook page show the animal’s shell lodged in the windshield as its legs dangle above the dashboard on the passenger’s side. She says her brother had shattered glass all over him but wasn’t hurt.
Catherine Glasby, spokesperson for Chatham County, said it hasn’t been determined “how or why” the turtle got into the air. The county’s police department responded to the incident, Glasby told McClatchy News on Tuesday.
Lark in a Facebook post said “someone must have been speeding and hit the turtle so that it came flying through the air.”
After the turtle pierced the windshield, the car had to be towed, according to officials.
“Mr Turtle was found at fault but he did not have insurance,” Lark wrote on Facebook. “He got escorted to the Wildlife reserve, I got stuck with the bill.”
The turtle was injured in the incident and later died, the driver told WSAV.
It wasn’t the first time an airborne critter smashed into a car in the Southeast.
In December, a bird dropped a catfish onto a windshield in North Carolina, McClatchy News reported at the time.
And in May 2019, a South Carolina driver hit a turtle, propelling it toward another car.
