Investigation underway after teen killed in Midlands shooting, officials say

A 16-year-old was killed in a shooting in the Midlands, according to law enforcement.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster confirmed to The State that the shooting happened in the Wise Street area of the city. That’s near U.S. 76/Wilson Road and the Newberry Speedway, about 2 miles from downtown Newberry.

Information about when the shooting happened was not available.

It was not immediately known if there were any other injuries.

The Newberry County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the shooting victim after notifying the next of kin.

There was no word on a shooter, or shooters, or a motive for the gunfire.

No arrests have been reported by the Newberry Police Department, which is investigating the shooting along with the coroner’s office.

Messages left with the police weren’t immediately returned Sunday.
