Hunter falls 30 feet as crews race to pinpoint his location, SC firefighters say
A fall left a hunter 30 feet below a tree stand in South Carolina, officials said.
The man was having chest pains as crews raced to find him on Saturday, Sept. 17, according to the Clio Rural Fire Department.
Initially, officials said a call came in reporting that the man was in distress “somewhere in the woods.” But the hunter’s son later got on the phone to help rescuers track them down.
“The victim was quickly located and found to be laying in a ditch after a 30’ fall,” firefighters wrote in a Facebook post.
The hunter was taken out of the woods to an ambulance before he was flown to a hospital, officials said.
“Safety note to all hunters, please utilize a safety harness and let someone know your exact location with a time to expect you home,” the fire department wrote on Facebook. “Be safe. We all wish the patient a speedy recovery.”
If you have an emergency and can access a cellphone, officials recommend trying to share your location via text message.
“Often in a fall or wreck, you either can not find or use your phone,” rescuers wrote. “Or you could be unconscious. It’s like a flight plan or float plan, make sure someone knows where you are and when you are to be back. ”
The Clio fire department said it helped the Blenheim Volunteer Fire District on the rescue. Both agencies are in Marlboro County, roughly 85 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach.
