South Carolina man killed while turkey hunting identified by coroner’s office
One person was killed while turkey hunting Wednesday night, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Michael Calvin Keeler Jr., a 34-year-old Waterloo resident, died at the scene from a gunshot wound, Laurens County Chief Deputy Coroner Patti Canupp told The State Thursday.
The accident happened at about 6 p.m. in the Upstate, South Carolina DNR officials said Thursday.
Two people were turkey hunting on Cliff Pitts Wildlife Management Area, according to officials. That’s 510 acres of mostly forest land in Laurens County.
Further information about the accident was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
An autopsy is scheduled Thursday in Greenville, Canupp said.
South Carolina DNR said no other information about the death is being made available because of the ongoing investigation.
Turkey hunting season in South Carolina opened Saturday.
In 2022, South Carolina DNR said there were 24 hunting incidents, and one of them was fatal. The fatality involved a gun.
None of the incidents occurred while turkey hunting, according to South Carolina DNR.
