Rider killed when motorcycle hits culvert and crashes into fence, SC cops say
A South Carolina man was killed Monday night when a motorcycle hit a culvert and crashed into a fence, officials said.
Roger Keith Gregory, a 43-year-old Woodruff resident, suffered blunt force trauma and died in the accident, according to Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 10:15 p.m. Monday in Greenwood County, said Cpl. David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Gregory was driving a 2007 Honda motorcycle north on Gary Road, according to Jones. Near the intersection with Windsor Road, the motorcycle ran off the left side of the road and collided with the culvert and fence, Jones said.
Gregory died at the scene, according to Jones.
Jones said Gregory was the only person on the motorcycle, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Gregory was wearing a helmet.
Gregory is survived by two children and his parents, among other family members, according to his obituary. A funeral service and burial will be held on Friday.
Information about what caused the motorcycle to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through Sunday, 257 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, and 25 involved a motorcycle, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, and 144 involved a motorcycle, DPS reported.
At least four people have died in Greenwood County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 13 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
This was one of three fatal motorcycle crashes in South Carolina in as many days, according to the Highway Patrol.
