A person was killed on an SC road and now a driver has been arrested, cops say
One person is dead and another was arrested after a hit-and-run crash on a Midlands road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
The collision happened at about 8 p.m. on May 6 in Orangeburg County, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
A 2006 Toyota Rav4 was driving north on U.S. 178/Whittaker Parkway when it ran off the right side of the road and hit a pedestrian near the intersection with U.S. 301/Five Chop Road, Glover said.
Isaiah Singleton, a 34-year-old Orangeburg resident, was behind the wheel of the SUV and drove away after the collision, according to Glover.
The pedestrian died at the scene, Glover said.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.
No other injuries were reported.
Singleton was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, according to Glover.
If convicted on the felony charge, Singleton faces a maximum punishment of 25 years in prison and a $25,000 fine, according to South Carolina Law.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol despite the arrest.
Through Sunday, 321 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 18 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 46 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
