A moped rider died after hitting a deer and falling onto a South Carolina road, officials said.

The 58-year-old man was rushed to a hospital and went on life support after the June 8 crash. He suffered a “traumatic brain injury due to blunt force trauma” and died two days later from crash-related injuries, according to the Anderson County coroner’s office.

The man was identified in a June 19 news release as Kenny Ray Reece of Belton. He was a father and grandfather, according to an obituary on the Sosebee Mortuary and Crematory website.

The crash was reported just before midnight in the Honea Path area. Reece was driving a moped on a road when a deer tried to make it across, the S.C. Highway Patrol said in a news release.

After Reece hit the deer, he was thrown onto the road and “sustained a critical injury.” He was flown to a hospital in Greenville — about 30 miles north of the crash site — and later died, according to officials.

An investigation into the deadly crash continues, troopers said.

Highway Patrol didn’t say whether the deer survived the crash that killed Reece. South Carolina drivers are urged to be cautious, as the animals are found throughout the state.
