Man killed in motorcycle crash on highway exit, Columbia police say
A man was killed late Saturday night when the motorcycle he was riding crashed on a highway exit ramp, the Columbia Police Department said.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 11 p.m., according to police.
The wreck happened on an exit ramp from Interstate 77 southbound, police said. The crash was on Exit 9, which is the I-77 junction with Leesburg Road.
Information about the crash, and if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet, was not available.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the man.
Police are continuing to investigate the wreck.
Through Wednesday, 664 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 41 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 67 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
