Best cheeseburgers in South Carolina? The ones served at this restaurant rank No. 1
A South Carolina burger joint has big fans — and now it tops a statewide list.
Hamburger Joe’s in North Myrtle Beach was named the state’s best place to eat a cheeseburger, according to results published Sept. 1.
The restaurant landed in the No. 1 spot after the review website Yelp studied comments that customers left between Jan. 1 and July 20. The website said it “ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews mentioning ‘cheeseburger.’”
What makes the burger joint rank No. 1?
On Yelp, some Hamburger Joe’s customers raved about burgers they said were well-cooked and came with several toppings to choose from. Many were fans of the cheeseburgers served “all the way” — with chili, slaw and onions.
Hamburger Joe’s boasts four out of five stars on Yelp. Though the restaurant also has a presence in nearby Surfside Beach, the North Myrtle Beach location reigned supreme in the rankings.
Joe Brooks helped the restaurant get its start more than 30 years ago.
“Joe wanted to offer casual fine dining to beach and golf enthusiasts, so he opened Joe’s Bar & Grill,” the restaurant wrote on its website. “Having the name, ‘Bar & Grill,’ many thought it was a burger joint, so Joe said let’s open a burger joint!”
In addition to cheeseburgers, the cash-only restaurant is known for its fried bologna sandwiches, Yelp told McClatchy News in an email. The online menu also includes barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, fries and other fan favorites.
