No signs of foul play after 25-year-old’s body found by busy Columbia road, officials say

A body was discovered near a busy road, the Columbia Police Department said Monday.

On Wednesday, 25-year-old Columbia resident Philip A. Edelmayer was identified as the victim, according to the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

Edelmayer died at the scene, police told The State.

The body was found in the area near the intersection of Leesburg Road and Garners Ferry Road, police said. That’s between Exit 9 on Interstate 77 and William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA hospital, in an area that’s densely packed with retail businesses and restaurants.

At about 7 a.m., officers responded to a report of a suspicious death in the 800 block of Leesburg Road, police said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not released Edelmayer’s cause of death.

Police said there were no “immediate signs of foul play at the scene.”

No other injuries were reported.
