Woman said she had ‘nothing to lose’ before winning SC lottery game’s grand prize
A Midlands woman was on a shopping trip when she decided to buy a lottery ticket, according to South Carolina Education Lottery officials.
The purchase paid off as the woman won the game’s $50,000 grand prize, officials said in a news release.
The Jumbo Bucks ticket didn’t seem to be on the woman’s shopping list, but she had a rationale for buying the scratch-off game, according to the release.
“I though it’s just $2, so I have nothing to lose,” she said in the release. “I was hoping I’d win, but not expecting it.”
The five-figure winning lottery game was sold at the Murphy Express gas station/convenience store at 3 Bay Lane in Camden, officials said. That’s next to a Lowe’s home improvement store in Kershaw County.
The woman plans on saving the newfound windfall, saying she isn’t going to spend it during another shopping trip, according to the release.
The winner will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
The odds of winning the $50,000 top prize in the Jumbo Bucks game were 1-in-600,000, according to the release. This was the fifth of the game’s eight top prize-winning tickets to be claimed, officials said.
The gas station received a commission of $500 for selling the claimed ticket, according to the release.
