Driver killed in crash where car ran off South Carolina road is identified by coroner

One person was killed Saturday night in a car crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Jesus Trinidad-Rosales, a 39-year-old North Augusta resident, is the driver who died, Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said Tuesday.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 7:50 p.m. Saturday in Aiken County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.

Trinidad-Rosales was driving a 2010 Nissan Maxima was north on Ascauga Lake Road, according to Butler. Near the intersection with Chalk Bed Road, the car ran off the right side of Ascauga Lake Road, where it first crashed into a mailbox and then a tree, Butler said.

Trinidad-Rosales died at the scene, according to Butler.

Butler said Trinidad-Rosales was the only person in the car, and no other injuries were reported. There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through July 7, at least 468 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 18 people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 38 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
