Wheelchair-bound man shot and killed his daughter, South Carolina sheriff says
A South Carolina woman was shot and killed Saturday, following a fight with her wheelchair-bound father, according to the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office.
The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as 41-year-old Lekenla R. Cantey, the sheriff’s office said Monday in a news release.
On Saturday, deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the Summerton area, and found an unresponsive Cantey in the hallway of a home, according to the release. Information about what time the shooting was reported, and the exact location of where the gunfire occurred, was not available.
She “succumbed (to) gunshot wounds which had been inflicted by her father,” the sheriff’s office said.
The shooting happened during a physical altercation between 68-year-old Buster Bennett and Cantey, while other family members were present, according to the release. Information about why the father and daughter were fighting was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
No charges have been filed, according to the sheriff’s office, which said it’s continuing to investigate the shooting.
In 2023, the father and daughter were involved in a civil case in which Bennett was listed as the plaintiff and Cantey the defendant, Clarendon County court records show. Further information about the case was not available, but it was dismissed without prejudice in November 2023, according to court records.
