SC man killed in crash that blocked busy Lexington County road is identified by coroner

A Sunday afternoon crash in Lexington County that involved a motorcycle resulted in a death, according to South Carolina officials.

Jose Antonio Colon, a 59-year-old West Columbia resident, died in what Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident.

At about 4:20 p.m., officers responded to the wreck, according to the West Columbia Police Department.

The two-vehicle collision happened near the 400 block of Sunset Boulevard, Fisher said. That’s near the junction with Meeting Street and the Gervais Street bridge, in the area where the Congaree and Saluda rivers converge.

Colon, who was wearing a helmet, was driving a motorcycle west on Sunset Boulevard when another vehicle in front of him turned, and the vehicles collided, according to Fisher.

Colon was taken to an area hospital where he later died from injuries he suffered in the wreck, Fisher said.

The coroner’s office said that the driver of the other vehicle was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the other driver was wearing a seat belt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and police.

Following the wreck, both lanes of Sunset Boulevard were temporarily closed as officials investigated the scene, police said. The busy road near downtown Columbia was closed for more than an hour, according to police.

Through Sunday, 597 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 35 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 45 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
