One person killed in crash on an SC road that involved a pickup truck, cops say

One person was killed Sunday when a pickup truck and bicycle were involved in a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about noon in Florence County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.

Both a 2022 Toyota Tacoma and the bicycle were heading east on Vox Highway, according to Miller. Near the intersection with Mill Branch Road the pickup and bike collided, and the bicycle rider died, Miller said.

The Florence County Coroner’s Office said 29-year-old Johnsonville resident Harley Howell was the victim, WMBF reported.

Miller said neither the pickup driver nor a passenger in the truck were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the bicycle rider was wearing a helmet, or if either of the people in the pickup had on seat belts.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sept. 8, at least 597 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 12 people have died in Florence County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
