Two teenagers charged with murder after one teen was killed and another hurt, SC cops say
Weeks after a teenager was killed and another was injured in a shooting in South Carolina, a 17- and 19-year-old were arrested and charged with murder, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to murder, Dalzell resident Jonathan Brown was also charged with five counts of attempted murder as well as single counts of discharging a firearm into vehicle while occupied, trafficking in fentanyl, possession of a stolen pistol, possession of a pistol by a person under 18 and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s office said in a Sept. 18 news release.
On Oct. 1, 19-year-old Sumter resident Henry Jahlil Brown was charged with murder, five counts of attempted murder and the single counts of discharging a firearm into vehicle while occupied as well as possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the sheriff’s office.
Henry Jahlil Brown was arrested Sept. 27, the sheriff’s office said.
The charges stem from a Sept. 3 shooting, when 16-year-old Hampton, Georgia, resident Jayvion Jones died, according to the release.
Jones was one of six juveniles in a car that was targeted in the Dalzell-area shooting, the sheriff’s office said.
Another 16-year-old was also wounded in the shooting, according to the release. Further information on the surviving victim’s condition was not available, but following the shooting the sheriff’s office said that teen was expected to make a full recovery.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about a motive for the shooting was not available.
At about 8:30 p.m., Jones’ body was discovered inside a vehicle on Black River Road and Edens Road, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker previously said.
After identifying Jonathan Brown as a suspect in the shooting, deputies searched his home and discovered fentanyl and a stolen gun, according to the sheriff’s office’s release. On Sept. 11, Brown was arrested for trafficking fentanyl and possession of a stolen gun and taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said.
As the investigation continued, deputies said they linked Jonathan Brown to the shooting and he was served additional warrants — including the murder charge.
Both Jonathan Brown and Henry Jahlil Brown remain in the county jail, according to the release.
Despite the arrests, the sheriff’s office said it’s continuing to investigate the death.
