One driver killed another airlifted to hospital in Columbia after crash, SC cops say
A Midlands man was killed Wednesday and another person was injured in a head-on crash between an SUV and a pickup truck, South Carolina officials said.
Cornelius Mack, 58, died in what Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident.
The collision happened at about 4:15 p.m., said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Mack was driving a 2022 Ford F-150 north on S.C. 120/Pinewood Road, according to Butler. Near the intersection with Coby Road the pickup collided with a 2015 GMC Acadia that was driving south on Pinewood Road, Butler said.
The pickup then ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a ditch, according to Butler.
Mack, a Sumter County resident, died at the scene from injuries he suffered in the wreck, Baker said. An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
The SUV driver was hurt and airlifted to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia, according to Butler. Further information on that driver’s condition was not available.
Butler said the drivers were the only people in their respective vehicles, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the drivers were wearing seat belts.
Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through Sunday, 648 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 12 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 30 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
