Two motorcycles crash and one rider is killed while the other is hurt, SC coroner says

Two motorcycles crashed early Sundayin South Carolina, killing one driver and leaving another severely injured, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

The collision happened at about 4:15 a.m. in North Augusta, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.

A group of people on motorcycles were on Jefferson Davis Highway when one of the bikers lost control in the 6000 block, according to the release. That motorcycle collided with the bike being driven by 47-year-old Pamplico resident Troy Johnson, Ables said.

Johnson’s motorcycle ran off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail before crashing into several signs, according to the release.

At 5:05 a.m., Johnson died at the scene from the injuries he suffered in the wreck, Ables said.

The other motorcycle rider involved in the crash was taken to a local hospital and is listed in severe condition, according to the release. Further information on the surviving victim’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the motorcycle riders involved in the collision were wearing helmets.

The wreck continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the North Augusta Department of Public Safety. Results of toxicology tests are pending, Ables said.

Another fatal motorcycle crash

This was the second deadly crash involving a motorcycle in Aiken County in as many days.

About seven hours earlier, at close to 9 p.m. Saturday, a 26-year-old Aiken man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of S.C. 118/Rudy Mason Parkway and Wrights Mill Road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Through Oct. 13, at least 750 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 25 people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 38 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
