15-year-old girl killed in crash that left four others hospitalized, SC officials say
A 15-year-old girl was killed in a recent crash that left four others hospitalized, according to South Carolina officials.
The teenager who died in the Oct. 25 wreck was a passenger in the backseat of an SUV, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office said.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 8:30 p.m. in Lancaster, according to Cpl. David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
There were five people in a 2008 Toyota SUV that was driving north on Old Hickory Road, Jones said. Near the intersection with Boxcar Road the SUV ran off the right side of Old Hickory Road and crashed into a ditch and hit a tree before overturning, according to Jones.
The 15-year-old died at the scene, the coroner’s office said.
The four other occupants of the SUV were taken to area hospitals, according to Jones. Further information on their conditions was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone in the SUV was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through Sunday, 806 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 13 people have died in Lancaster County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
