Is it OK or illegal to flash headlights in SC to warn people of speed traps? What the law says
Speed traps are no fun.
Some people dislike speed traps so much that they’ll even go out of their way to warn other drivers by flashing their headlights. Doing so may help other drivers avoid hefty speeding tickets.
But could flashing your headlights as a warning in South Carolina get you a fine from the police instead? The law is a bit murky on the matter.
Here’s what South Carolina law says about flashing headlights to warn drivers about speed traps.
Can you use headlights to warn drivers in SC?
In South Carolina, there are no laws that make it illegal for drivers to flash their headlights or otherwise warn motorists about speed traps, according to Nosal & Jeter Attorneys and Counselors at Law in Fort Mill, S.C.
“However, law enforcement may still pull someone over for the practice due to violations of other laws,” the law firm states.
Such laws include:
- Interfering with an official investigation
- Having flashing lights on your vehicle that are deemed distracting
- Shining high beams at other vehicles, which comes with a $200 fine in South Carolina
Other SC headlight laws
While it’s not technically illegal to flash headlights to warn drivers of speed traps in South Carolina, the state does have other headlight laws on the books under SC Code 56-5-4830.
If your vehicle’s headlight or illuminating device projects a beam of light brighter than 300 candlepower, ensure it doesn’t strike the road at a distance of more than 75 feet away.
A person is not allowed to drive or park any vehicle upon a highway with a lamp or device on it displaying a red or blue light visible directly in front of the center of it unless that person is authorized emergency or law enforcement personnel.
The law also prohibits flashing lights except on authorized emergency vehicles, school buses, or on any vehicle as a means of indicating a right or left turn or the presence of a vehicular traffic hazard.
