Body found inside fire at mobile home in the Midlands, South Carolina coroner says

There was an early-morning fire mobile home in South Carolina Monday and a man who lived there died, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

Walter Richburg, 76, died from injuries he suffered and he was found in his home, Coroner Robbie Baker said in a news release.

At about 6:15 a.m., emergency responders were called to a fire at the mobile home at 237 West Williams Street, according to the release. That’s in Sumter, in the area between U.S. 15/South Lafayette Drive and U.S. 521/South Guignard Drive.

Information about how long it took to extinguish the fire was not available.

Richburg died at the scene, Baker said.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about the extent of the damages, and if the mobile home was considered a total loss, was not available.

There was no word on where the fire originated or the cause of the fire, but Richburg’s death is being investigated by the coroner’s office, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and the Sumter Fire Department.

An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.

There was no word if foul play was suspected.
