Man arrested in SC club shooting that injured one woman, killed another, deputies say
The Richland County sheriff’s department has arrested a man in a nightclub shooting, where two women were shot and one of them died.
Hours following the shooting, deputies charged Joshua Cain, 21, with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to a Monday afternoon news release. Deputies arrested Cain at his residence after securing a search warrant.
Just before midnight on Nov. 24, 2024, deputies working a detail at Club Space heard gun shots behind the building, according to a Monday morning news release. That’s at 2732 Decker Blvd., near the intersection with Trenholm Road, and not far from Exit 74 on Interstate 20. Following the shots, deputies discovered two women who were shot in the upper body.
One of the victims was conscious and alert, the sheriff’s department said. That victim was taken to a local hospital, according to the release. Further information on her condition was not available.
The second victim was unresponsive, the sheriff’s department said. EMS pronounced her dead at the scene, according to the release. The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Ciauta Dunbar, 21, of Columbia.
Investigators determined that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between three people, including Cain, the release said, adding that the victim who lost her life was not apart of the initial dispute.
Information about the detail that brought deputies to the club was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
Officials with the nightclub addressed the “heartbreaking tragedy” on social media.
“At Space803, we are dedicated to serving our community with integrity and compassion. Recent events have brought significant challenges and scrutiny, but we remain steadfast in our commitment to the values that guide our business,” the club officials said in a post on the club’s Facebook page. “We want to make it unequivocally clear: in no way, shape, or form do we condone domestic violence, and we stand firmly against any acts of harm within our community.
“At the time of the incident, Space803 had safety measures in place, including Richland County Sheriff’s Department personnel and SLED-certified armed security, to ensure the safety of our customers and staff.”
