A winning Powerball ticket was sold to SC man who bought a snack before watching football

A Lowcountry man was buying a snack at a Publix supermarket before he settled in to watch a football game on television when he decided to include a Powerball ticket in the purchase, according to South Carolina Education Lottery officials.

The decision paid off, in a big way, as the man won a $1 million Powerball jackpot following an October drawing, officials said in a news release. That’s near downtown Charleston.

“It was crazy and wild,” he said in the release.

There was no word about how his team did in the football game, but he finished the day as a big winner after matching the first five white balls in the drawing, according to the release. Had he also matched the Powerball number the man would have captured the game’s $303 million grand prize.

The seven-figure winning Powerball game was sold at the Publix grocery store at 1000 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. in Mount Pleasant, officials said.

The winning numbers in the Oct. 5 drawing were 2, 12, 46, 52, 65 and Powerball: 3.

The odds of matching all five white numbers were 1-in-11,688,054, officials said.

The winner said he’s not telling anyone about the payday and is saving the newfound windfall as a nest egg, according to the release.

The winner is allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

For selling the claimed ticket, the Publix super market in Mount Pleasant received a commission of $10,000, officials said.

A winning ticket for Saturday’s drawing was sold in New York and somebody won Powerball’s $256 million grand prize, meaning Monday’s drawing will be for a $20 million jackpot, according to the game’s website.

Anyone looking to buy a ticket must make a purchase by 9:59 p.m. Monday for the 10:59 p.m. drawing. Tickets are $2, and could cost more with additional options.

The odds of winning Powerball’s grand prize are 1-in-293 million.
