Cow thrown into oncoming traffic after one crash, leading to fatal collision, SC cops say
One person was killed and another was hospitalized Tuesday after multiple vehicles crashed into a cow, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The three-vehicle collision happened at about 7:15 a.m. in Abbeville County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.
A 2005 Ford pickup truck was driving driving west on S.C. 20, and near the intersection with Winona Church Road it hit a cow that was in the roadway, according to Bolt.
The cow was thrown into the eastbound lane of S.C. 20, where it was hit by a 2023 Toyota sedan and then a 2013 Toyota SUV crashed into the animal, Bolt said.
The driver of the Toyota sedan died, while the Toyota SUV driver was injured and taken to an area hospital. Further information on the SUV driver’s condition was not available.
The Abbeville County Coroner’s Office said 52-year-old Abbeville resident Amy Ward died at the scene, WYFF reported.
Bolt said the pickup driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about the cow was not available after it was struck by the three vehicles.
There was no word if any of the drivers involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 905 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least four people have died in Abbeville County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
