Columbia man dies after house fire where heavy flames were seen, SC officials say

A South Carolina man was killed in a recent house fire, the Richland County Coroner’s Office said Thursday.

Ricky Hall, 65, died from the injuries he suffered in the Dec. 13 fire at a home on Beaverbrook Road, Coroner Naida Rutherford said. That’s in the area of Columbia between Fairfield Road and Wilson Boulevard, not far from Exit 70 on Interstate 20.

Firefighters responded to the home at about 11 a.m. on Dec. 13, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

The firefighters found heavy fire and smoke throughout the property, a fire department official said.

They also discovered one person in a rear bedroom of the home, and the firefighters successfully got the person out through a window, according to the official.

That person, and a second occupant of the home who suffered “minor injuries,” were taken to an area hospital by Richland County EMS, the fire department official said.

The fire department official said there were no other occupants in the home, and no other injuries were reported.

Further information on the surviving occupant’s condition was not available.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., officials said that the fire was brought under control and extinguished.

Information about the extent of the damages caused by the fire, and if the home was considered a total loss, was not available.

There was no word about where the fire originated, but the cause of the fire is being investigated by the Richland County Fire Marshal’s Office, officials said. They did not say if foul play was suspected.

The coroner’s office said it is continuing to investigate the death.
