Will the Amazon workers strike delay your SC Christmas deliveries? Here’s what we know
Amazon drivers and warehouse workers across seven different warehouses coordinated a strike with the Teamsters union on Thursday, Dec. 19, just days before Christmas.
These strikes are happening around major delivery area hubs: New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
This campaign launched by the Teamsters union comes during the holiday shopping rush, in what they state is the “largest strike against Amazon in American history” but has barely made a ripple in Amazon’s shipping operations.
Amazon has stated there has been no impact on operations and deliveries but some online shoppers may still be worried if their Christmas gifts will make it in time.
What are the Teamsters and why are they striking?
The Teamsters state that they represent almost 10,000 Amazon staff and contractors in warehouses, deliveries and air hubs.
The Teamsters have been demanding that Amazon come to the bargaining table and are fighting for higher wages, better benefits and safer work conditions for Amazon employees.
Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien stated ahead of the strike, “If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it.”
What to know about holiday deliveries in SC
At this time, there have been no reports of operational or package delivery delays for South Carolina residents.
Amazon says it doesn’t expect the strike to impact its operations. The only concern is that if the strike continues or results in a larger walkout, especially one that lasts many days, it could delay shipments in some metro areas.
