Driver killed when pickup truck runs off the side of I-26, South Carolina cops say
One person was killed Monday night when a pickup truck driving on Interstate 26 crashed in Richland County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 7:20 p.m., said Cpl. Nick Pye.
A 2003 Chevrolet pickup was driving west on I-26, and at the 97 mile marker it veered off the left side of the highway and crashed into a guardrail, according to Pye. That’s near the junction with U.S. 176 in the area close to the line between Richland and Lexington counties.
The driver was taken to an area hospital and later died, Pye said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
Pye said the driver was the only person in Chevy, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the pickup to veer off I-26 was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 936 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 50 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 61 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
