The pilot and a passenger escaped unhurt when an experimental plane experienced engine failure and crashed Sunday evening near Lake Keowee in West Union, SC.

Around 5:45pm, 911 in Oconee County reported getting several calls “reporting seeing a small plane fall from the sky,” fire chief Charles King said in a news release.

Emergency units quickly found the pilot and a passenger who, miraculously, were not injured. The experimental plane “sustained heavy damage,” King said.

The pilot said when he lost his engine, he tried to land on a newly constructed residential street.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified, King said.
