Teenager is second person arrested after a South Carolina man was killed, cops say
Months after a South Carolina man was shot and killed a teenager was arrested, the Aiken Department of Public Safety said Monday.
Tristen Jersey Mccarty, a 17-year-old Trenton resident, was the second person arrested in connection to the Sept. 18, 2024, fatal shooting of William Lee Mathis Jr., the department of public safety said in a news release.
The teen was charged with accessory before the fact to murder as well as accessory after the fact to murder, according to the release. No bond has been set for Mccarty, who was arrested Jan. 8, jail records show.
In December, 22-year-old Aiken resident Sabastyen Miles Greene was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a crime connected to the death of the 42-year-old Aiken resident, the department of public safety said.
On Sept. 18, an officer was responding to a report about a shooting on Columbia Avenue Northeast when a victim was discovered nearby on Chesterfield Street, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office. That’s in the city limits, not far from Aiken High School.
The victim, later identified as Mathis, had been shot in the body and was taken to an area hospital, the coroner’s office said. Mathis died at 11:13 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.
No other injuries were reported.
Mccarty had driven Greene in a 2000 Ford Explorer when they passed Mathis, who was riding his bicycle, an arrest warrant said.
Greene approached Mathis near the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Chesterfield Street and pointed a gun at him in an attempted robbery, according to the arrest warrant. An altercation ensued and Greene shot Mathis in the chest, the arrest warrant said.
Mccarty waited for Greene, then let him back in the SUV before driving away to Greene’s home, according to the arrest warrant.
Like Mccarty, no bond was set for Greene, and both are being held at the Aiken County Detention Center, jail records show.
Despite the arrests, the shooting continues to be investigated, and anyone with information is asked to call the department of public safety at 803-642-7620, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
“Information from the community is vital to helping with investigations,” the department of public safety said.
