Midlands man dies at hospital following shooting, South Carolina coroner says

An investigation is underway following the Tuesday night death of a South Carolina man, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

Christopher Abrams, a 56-year-old Sumter County resident, died following a shooting, Coroner Robbie Baker said Wednesday in a news release.

The shooting happened at about 9 p.m. Tuesday in the area near Brent Street and Whitehorse Street, according to the release. That’s close to the intersection with Manning Road in the south Sumter area.

Abrams was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital where he died, Baker said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a possible motive for the shooting was not available.

No arrests have been reported, but Abrams’ death is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy will be performed next week at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
