22-year-old charged after another inmate at SC jail was stabbed, sheriff says

An inmate at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center was charged after another man being held at the jail in Columbia was stabbed, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Traverese Webber, 22, was arrested on a first-degree assault and battery charge, the sheriff’s department said Thursday in a news release.

The attack happened Wednesday, according to the release.

At about 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to reports of a stabbing at the jail and were taken to where the assault happened, the sheriff’s department said.

After an investigation, deputies determined that Webber stabbed another inmate numerous times in multiple locations in the same dorm, according to the release.

The sheriff’s department said that the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the jail’s medical ward.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about a motive for the attack.

Webber was being held at Alvin S. Glenn after being arrested on Jan. 4, jail records show. Information about that charge was not available.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on the new charge from the stabbing on March 28, according to Richland County judicial records.

The jail is managed by the Richland County government, not the sheriff’s department.

The Richland County jail has drawn criticism for years because of deaths, violence, poor conditions and understaffing. On Jan. 15, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the findings of its investigation into the jail, saying a “culture of violence” became “pervasive, systematic and commonplace,” at the detention center.

For their part, Richland County administrators maintain that they are continuing to make progress on improving conditions at the jail.
