One driver is killed and another is injured in crash near high school, SC cops say

One person was killed and another was injured in a Sunday morning crash on a Richland County road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 8:45 a.m., said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.

A 2017 Toyota Camry was driving north on Lower Richland Boulevard, according to Butler. Near the intersection with Rabbit Run the Toyota collided with a 2019 Jeep Compass that was driving south on Lower Richland Boulevard, Butler said. That’s less than half a mile from Lower Richland High School.

Both drivers, who were the only occupants in their respective vehicles, were taken to an area hospital, where the Toyota driver died, according to Butler.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Toyota driver.

Further information on the Jeep driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available. Butler did not say if the crash continues to be investigated.

Through Feb. 2, at least 52 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least six people have died in Richland County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 52 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
