Years after man was killed in Columbia a teenager has been arrested, SC police say
Years after a man was shot and killed in South Carolina, a teenager has been arrested and charged with murder, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Now 19-years-old, Tamir Hooks was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime connected to the 2023 death of 27-year-old Nicholas Miller, police said. Hooks was previously booked into Richland County’s Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on March 18, 2024, jail records show.
On May 17, 2023, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 7800 block of Bailey Street, according to police. That’s in the area between S.C. 277 and U.S. 1, close to the Prisma Health Richland hospital facility.
Officers found the victim, later identified as Miller, outside and he was taken to the hospital, where he died, police said.
No other injuries were reported.
Officers made the discovery after responding to a ShotSpotter alert, police said. ShotSpotter is a technology that uses acoustic monitors to detect a sound like gunfire. The system sends the gunfire’s location to Columbia police within 45 seconds.
There was no word about a motive for the gunfire, or if Miller and Hooks knew each other prior to the shooting.
Information about how police connected Hooks to the shooting was not available.
Jail records show Hooks was also charged with two counts of attempted murder and two more counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, as well as a single count of possession of a machine gun/sawed-off shotgun. Those additional charges stem from a March 2024 arrest, according to Richland County court records.
Bond was denied on all seven charges, and Hooks remains locked up, jail records show.
