SC man took millions of government money from business for himself, prosecutor says

A South Carolina man is going to prison after he was convicted of taking millions of government money from the business where he worked, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Daniel Criswell Lee, a 55-year-old Sumter resident, was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for wire fraud and was also ordered to pay $2.8 million in restitution, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release. There is no parole in the federal system.

The convictions stems from a charge that’s related to when Lee worked as project manager for Agile Infrastructure Service LLC, according to the release. The company based out of Idaho offers construction management services, according to the Better Business Bureau. And the services are intended for U.S. federal government agencies and installations, Gov Tribe reported.

The work was for the U.S. Army training base Fort Jackson in Columbia, the Sumter Item reported. Information about the specific nature of the contract was not available.

As project manager, Lee represented Agile in the bidding process to obtain government contracts, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in the release. When Agile was awarded a project, “Lee diverted money paid by the government for work on the project and owed to Agile to corporations under his control,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Lee then used the money, at least $2.8 million, for his own benefit, according to the release. There was no word what Lee did with the money, or if he spent all of it.

Following his prison term, Lee was sentenced to 3 years of court-ordered supervision, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

This case was investigated by Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division and Defense Criminal Investigative Service.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Potterfield prosecuted the case. Information about Lee’s attorney was not available.
