Booby trap at vacant SC home kills man checking on relative’s property, sheriff says

A South Carolina man was killed Monday when he triggered a booby trap while checking on a vacant Midlands home, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Jordan Dove, a 34-year-old Lugoff resident, is the man who was shot, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Deputies found Dove at a Chickadee Circle home in St. Matthews suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the release.

EMS took Dove to an area hospital where he later died, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff Thomas Summer said that Dove was shot while checking on a vacant home that belonged to a relative. Deputies determined the shot was fired from inside the home, according to the release.

The deputies believed the house had been booby trapped, the sheriff’s office said. They cautiously set up a perimeter around the home and slowly went inside, where they discovered a shotgun that was rigged at the back door to go off once anyone entered, according to the release.

The shotgun was dismantled from the trap and deputies processed the crime scene, the sheriff’s office said.

No other injuries were reported.

Alfonzo Brown, who’s currently incarcerated out of state, is expected to face charges connected to the deadly shooting, according to the release. There was no word if it was Brown’s home, but Summers said law enforcement officers were the intended target of the booby trap.

Information about the charges Brown could face was not available.

“It is yet another example of the dangers faced by law enforcement every day,” Summer said in the release.

Although the sheriff said the shooting was “very dangerous,” he went on to call it “an isolated incident,” adding that there is “no threat to the public.”

The sheriff’s office said the investigation “is still very active,” and if anyone has information about the shooting they’re asked to call 803-874-2741, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
