Vulnerable adult was hit in the head and body at least 38 times by caretaker, SC cops say

A Columbia woman was recently arrested for abusing a vulnerable adult who was in her care, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Doris Williams Nash, 63, was charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult, SLED said Tuesday in a news release.

Nash was arrested March 6 and booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release. She’s not currently listed on the Richland County jail’s inmate roster, and information about her bond was not available.

The abuse happened Oct. 12, 2024, when Nash was working as a direct support professional at the Midlands Regional Center facility at 8301 Farrow Road in Columbia, according to an arrest warrant. The facility is operated by the South Carolina Department of of Disability and Special Needs and is a home where care is to be provided for individuals with disabilities, according to the agency’s website.

Nash physically abused the victim, hitting and flicking her in the body at least 38 times, the arrest warrant shows. The vulnerable adult also was slapped numerous times by Nash, who also kicked and shook the victim, according to the arrest warrant.

Additionally, Nash sat on the victim “10 times while dancing, laughing and putting her body weight onto her,” the arrest warrant says.

Nash was arrested after SLED conducted interviews, looked at surveillance videos and was provided information, according to the arrest warrant.

Information about the victim’s physical condition was not available. There was no word about a motive for the abuse.

No other injuries were reported.

SLED said the South Carolina Department of Disability and Special Needs requested an investigation.

Nash will be prosecuted by the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, according to SLED’s release.

SLED said Nash was a former employee with Midlands Regional Center, but there was no word if she was fired or if she resigned.
