SC man killed in Arby’s parking lot is identified by Richland County coroner
A teenager was charged with murder following a recent shooting at a fast food restaurant in South Carolina, according to the Columbia Police Department.
The 16-year-old also was charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, police said in a news release. The teen’s name was not made public because of his age.
Aaron J. Weibel, a 34-year-old Camden resident, was identified as the shooting victim, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Tuesday.
The shooting happened April 17 in the parking lot of the Arby’s at 7521 Garners Ferry Road, according to the release. That’s in a part of Columbia that’s densely packed with retail businesses and restaurants, not far from Exit 9 on Interstate 77.
At about 9:30 p.m. on April 17, the teen was arguing with Weibel in the parking lot, police said. The argument turned physical and the 16-year-old shot the victim once in the upper body, according to police.
The coroner’s office is assisting police with the investigation, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word why the teen and Weibel were arguing, or if they knew each other before the shooting.
Information about when the teen was arrested was not available.
The teen is being held at a South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice facility, police said.
