South Carolina police officer injured when his gun is fired, cops say

An officer was injured Sunday morning when his gun was accidentally fired, according to the Sumter Police Department.

The shooting happened at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Department Detention Center, police said in a news release.

The police officer suffered “a minor injury,” according to the release. He was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, where he was treated and later released, police said. Further information on the officer’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about what led to the gun being fired, and who pulled the trigger, was not available.

The shooting is being investigated by police and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
