Driver killed when SUV crashes into ditch and flips over, SC cops say

One person was killed Saturday night when an SUV crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 10:15 p.m. in Laurens County, Sgt. Tyler Tidwell said Monday.

A 2001 Chevrolet SUV was driving north on Durbin Road, according to Tidwell. Near the intersection with Durbin Church Road the Chevy ran off the left side of the Durbin Road where it crashed into a ditch and flipped over, Tidwell said.

The driver died, according to Tidwell.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office said 34-year-old Jonathan Henderson was the driver who died at the scene, WYFF reported. The coroner’s office said Henderson, who was not wearing a seat belt, died of blunt force trauma, WHNS reported.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available. Tidwell did not say if the Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.

Through Sunday, 270 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least eight people have died in Laurens County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 15 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
