‘Shots fired’ emergency call leads officers to a dead male, SC police say

Officers were responding to an emergency call at a motel Friday in South Carolina when they found a dead male, according to the Columbia Police Department.

At about 6:30 a.m., officers responded to a shots fired call at the Carolina Lodge, formerly the Coronet Motel, police said. That’s in the 6300 block of North Main Street, in the area between Farrow Road and Fairfield Road, near Exit 70 on Interstate 20.

At the motel, officers found a deceased male in the parking lot, according to police.

As of Monday, the Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim, but police said the coroner is assisting the investigation.

No other injuries were reported.

Officers canvassed the area for surveillance video and gathered more information, according to police.

There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a possible motive for the shooting was not available.

No arrests have been reported, but the shooting continues to be investigated by police.
