Driver killed in early-morning crash, South Carolina Highway Patrol says
One person was killed early Sunday morning when a motorcycle crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3:15 a.m. in Florence County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.
A motorcycle was driving south on Poston Corner Road, according to Ridgeway. It was near the intersection with Millhouse Road when the motorcycle ran off the right side of Poston Corner Road then crashed into a ditch and spilled, Ridgeway said.
The driver, who was the only person on the motorcycle, died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.
The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the motorcycle rider.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet.
Ridgeway said both the make and model of the motorcycle were unknown.
Information about what caused the motorcycle to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through May 18, at least 291 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 13 people have died in Florence County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 25 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
