Teen stabbed victim then hit them with stolen car, South Carolina sheriff says
A South Carolina teenager was charged with attempted murder after a person was recently stabbed and run over — twice — with their vehicle, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The 17-year-old Sumter resident, who was not publicly identified because of their age, is being charged as an adult, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
At about 11 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a reported crash with injuries on U.S. 15, and initial reports indicated a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, according to the release.
Deputies discovered two vehicles had been involved in a collision, and a pedestrian sustained severe injuries after being struck by one of the vehicles, the sheriff’s office said.
The teen approached deputies and claimed to have been attacked, then admitted to striking the victim with a car, according to the release.
Witnesses told deputies that they believed the teen and the victim met in the victim’s parked vehicle earlier that evening, the sheriff’s office said. The 17-year-old stabbed the victim who then ran from the vehicle, according to the release.
The teen took control of the victim’s vehicle and intentionally struck the victim with it, the sheriff’s office said.
A passerby stopped to assist the victim and was present when the teen returned to the scene and ran over the victim again, this time hitting the passerby’s vehicle and injuring that driver, according to the release.
EMS took both victims to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, the sheriff’s office said. Further information on their conditions was not available.
The teen was also taken to the hospital for evaluation, the sheriff’s office said.
After being medically cleared and released from the hospital, the teen was arrested and taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where they are awaiting a bond hearing, according to the release.
In addition to attempted murder, the teen was also charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, the sheriff’s office said.
Despite the teen’s arrest, the incident remains under investigation.
Information about why the teen and victim originally met and what led to the attack was not available. There was no word if the teen and the victim knew each other prior to the attack.
