Deputy is fired and arrested for something he did on the job, SC sheriff says

A South Carolina man was fired from his role with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and later arrested for something he did while on the job, officials said.

Christopher Moore was charged with misconduct in office Tuesday, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. The 29-year-old was fired last week, a day after investigators learned that Moore had used his position to gain a personal relationship, according to the release.

On June 19, investigators learned that Moore, while employed as a deputy, conducted a traffic stop where he obtained a woman’s personal information through his position as a law enforcement officer, the sheriff’s department said. Moore used the woman’s information to contact her in a personal capacity while using his department-issued cell phone, according to the release.

Moore was fired June 20, the sheriff’s department said. He had been with the sheriff’s department for about 18 months, serving as a community action team deputy, according to the release.

On Tuesday he was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where he remains behind bars while waiting for a bond hearing, jail records show.

Following the bond hearing, the Marion resident is scheduled to return to court on the misconduct charge Aug. 29, according to Richland County judicial records.

“It’s incidents like this that lead to mistrust in police and I will not tolerate it.” Sheriff Leon Lott said in the release. “We have so many good deputies and it angers me to have one (among) us that has betrayed the community’s trust. But ... I will hold my deputies who break the law accountable.”
