One person killed when SUV leading chase crashes, South Carolina cops say
One person was killed Saturday when a vehicle leading law enforcement officers on a chase crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3:15 a.m. in Cherokee County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
A 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe was driving south on Dravo Road as it tried to escape law enforcement officers, according to Bennett. That’s near the Broad River in the area of the state line that separates South Carolina and North Carolina.
Near the intersection with Dravo Road Extension the Chevy ran off the road and crashed into a ditch, Bennett said. Information about why the Chevy was being chased was not available.
A passenger in the Chevy SUV died at the scene, according to Bennett.
The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the passenger who died.
Bennett said that the Chevy driver and and another passenger in the SUV were not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if any of the people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.
No arrests were reported by the Highway Patrol, which said it’s investigating the crash while the Cleveland County Sheriff’ Office is leading an investigation into what prompted the chase.
Through July 13, at least 449 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 11 people have died in Cherokee County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 20 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
