South Carolina woman killed in multi-vehicle crash, coroner says

A South Carolina woman was killed Saturday night in a crash, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Summer Poole, a 28-year-old New Ellenton resident, died in what Coroner Darryl Ables called an accident.

A two-vehicle collision happened in Aiken at about 6:10 p.m., Ables said in a news release.

Poole was driving a 2003 Honda motorcycle south on Whiskey Road when it collided with a northbound Honda Civic that pulled into her path at the intersection with Chukker Creek Road, according to the release.

Poole died at the scene at 6:53 p.m., Ables said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if Poole was wearing a helmet, or if the car driver was wearing a seat belt.

Alcohol was found to be a contributing factor in the collision and 55-year-old Aiken resident Christopher Hogan was arrested on a felony DUI charge, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

The crash continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety, and an autopsy is scheduled for next week in Newberry, according to the release.

Through July 20, at least 465 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least nine people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 28 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
