21-year-old killed in shooting that wounded another person, SC officials say
A 21-year-old South Carolina man was killed and another person was injured Sunday in a shooting, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Columbia resident Laneef T. Mingo is the victim who died, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Monday night.
Deputies were responding to a Shotspotter alert that there was a shooting in the 1600 block of Devonwood Drive when they learned of other reports of gunfire in the area, including in the 200 block of Bentley Court where Mingo had been shot in the upper body, according to the sheriff’s department.
ShotSpotter is a technology that uses acoustic monitors to detect a sound like gunfire. The system sends the gunfire’s location to law enforcement within 45 seconds.
It was not clear if the same shooter, or shooters, were responsible for the gunfire separated by about 2 miles in the area of Columbia that’s between the Broad River and Broad River Road.
Mingo was taken by EMS to an area hospital where he died, the sheriff’s department said.
A second victim was located at the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s department. Further information on that victim’s condition, and where they were when hit by gunfire, was not available.
No other injuries were reported, but there was significant property damage in the area where the shooting occurred.
Apartment buildings in the 1600 blocks of both Longcreek Drive and Grays Inn Road were riddled with bullets, deputies said in an incident report. A bullet hole was found in a glass door at one apartment while another was severely damaged by gunfire as bullets went through walls, going upstairs and into the unit’s kitchen, according to the incident report.
Broken glass was also discovered in a nearby parking lot, the incident report shows.
There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a possible motive for the shooting was not available.
No arrests have been reported, but the homicide continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s department and coroner’s office.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 803-576-3000, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit a tip online.
