Driver killed when car crashes into tree, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed over the weekend in a crash, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened Saturday at about 12:30 p.m. in Bamberg County, Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover said.

A 2022 Dodge Challenger was driving east on U.S. 78, according to Glover. Near the intersection with Ghents Branch Road the Dodge ran off the left side of the road, then veered back across all of the lanes and off the right side of Ghents Branch Road where it crashed into a tree, Glover said.

The driver, who was the only person in the Dodge, died at the scene, according to Glover.

The Bamberg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what originally caused the Dodge to veer off the road was not available. Glover did not say if the wreck is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through July 27, at least 484 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least six people have died in Bamberg County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were two deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
