Two people shot and deputies hurt in crash that followed, SC sheriff says
Two deputies, who were at the scene of a shooting in South Carolina Saturday where two people were hurt, wound up getting injured themselves when they were involved in a crash, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies got involved at about 2 p.m., when they responded to reports of a shooting in the 500 block of Calvary Drive, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s in Columbia, near Crane Church Road and not far from Exit 70 on Interstate 20, which is the junction with Fairfield Road.
Deputies found a man who had been shot in the upper body and a woman who was hit by gunfire in the lower body, according to the release. EMS took both shooting victims to an area hospital, the sheriff’s department said. Further information on their conditions was not available.
Deputies discovered property damage from gunfire as well, the sheriff’s department said.
There was no word about a shooter, or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a possible motive for the shooting was not available.
Deputies remained on scene while crime scene units processed evidence, according to the release.
At about 5:50 p.m., deputies were clearing the scene when they heard gunshots in the area then saw a vehicle speeding away, the sheriff’s department said. As two deputies attempted to turn around their patrol car to pursue the vehicle, they were involved in a single-vehicle collision off Crane Church Road, according to the release.
Both deputies in the patrol car were injured and taken to a local hospital by EMS, the sheriff’s department said. Further information on the deputies’ conditions was not available.
Nobody else was reported to be hurt following the crash, and there was no word about what happened to the vehicle speeding away from the scene, or if any occupants were involved in the shooting.
Information about what caused the patrol car to crash was not available.
No injuries, or property damage, was reported from the second shooting, according to the release. There was no word if the two shootings are considered to be connected.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck. The sheriff’s department is leading the investigation into the shootings, and no arrests have been reported.
