Golf cart crashes into ditch, killing South Carolina man, coroner says

A South Carolina man was killed early Saturday morning when the golf cart he was driving crashed, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Ronald New, an 86-year-old Aiken resident, is the man who died in what Coroner Darryl Ables called an accident.

At about 12:40 a.m., the coroner’s office responded to the single-vehicle collision at the intersection of Powell Pond Road and Scotch Lane, according to a news release. That’s in Aiken, near Exit 18 on Interstate 20.

New was driving a an EZ-GO golf cart west on Powell Pond Road when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road, Ables said. The golf cart crashed into a ditch and New was ejected from the vehicle, according to the release.

New suffered blunt force injuries and died at the scene, Ables said.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the golf cart to veer off the road was not available but the wreck is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Results of toxicology tests are pending, Ables said.

Through Aug. 3, at least 497 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 11 people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 28 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
