Driver killed in crash with disabled dump truck on South Carolina road, cops say
One person was killed Wednesday when a pickup truck crashed into the back of dump truck that was disabled on an Upstate road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The collision happened at about 6:30 a.m. in Spartanburg County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.
A 1997 GMC pickup truck was driving north on S.C. 101, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Kirby Road the pickup crashed into the rear of a disabled 2023 Mack dump truck that was stopped on S.C. 101, Ridgeway said.
The pickup driver died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.
The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the pickup driver as 55-year-old Greer resident Rogelio Hernandez-Grijalva, WYFF reported.
Ridgeway said the dump truck was unoccupied, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the pickup driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about why the dump truck was disabled was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 521 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 59 people have died in Spartanburg County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 60 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
